Dr George Karpetis - Psychodynamic Psychotherapist & Counsellor — Adelaide

Dr George Karpetis

I work with adults who are looking for something deeper than short-term, symptom-focused support — people who want to genuinely understand themselves, and to change patterns that have proven resistant to other approaches.

My practice is grounded in psychodynamic psychotherapy: a way of working that takes seriously the idea that our present difficulties — in relationships, at work, in how we feel about ourselves — often have roots that aren’t immediately obvious. Rather than offering quick techniques, I work collaboratively and at depth, over time, to help clients make sense of what’s been repeating, stuck, or unspoken.

Many of the people I see have already tried other forms of therapy without the change they were hoping for. I have particular experience working with adults presenting with treatment-resistant and longstanding difficulties, including anxiety, depression, and relationship and personality difficulties that haven’t shifted with brief interventions. Some clients stay in therapy for years — not because progress is slow, but because lasting change, in my experience, is built through a sustained and trusted therapeutic relationship.

Training and background

My approach is shaped by an unusually long and specific training in psychoanalytic and psychodynamic work — including my own four years of personal psychoanalysis, extensive clinical supervision, and postgraduate training in the UK (including at the Tavistock Clinic) and in Greece. I hold a PhD, examining psychodynamic clinical practice, and I continue to have my own practice supervised on an ongoing basis by a psychoanalyst in London.

Alongside my clinical work, I hold an adjunct academic appointment at the University of Adelaide’s Medical School, and I have taught and researched in mental health and clinical practice at universities in Australia and Greece for over a decade.

I am an Accredited Mental Health Social Worker (Medicare provider), an accredited Clinical Counsellor with PACFA, and a Clinical Member of the Australian & New Zealand Association of Psychotherapy.

GPs can supply and mental health care plan, as “interpersonal therapy” descibes what I do for Medicare.

Also available for appointments on Saturday mornings

We understand that journeys are travelled better together. No issue is too big or too small. Whether it’s a series of sessions to deal with a complex problem or a single session to address a specific concern, we’re here to listen and help.
