Taking Control of Child Behaviour Problems
At Rose Park Psychology, parents are offered individual parenting assistance for a range of child behaviour problems, including disobedience, whining, arguing, fighting, biting, bed-wetting, yelling, tantrums, sibling rivalry, anger and aggression.
Parenting strategies are taught that are effective in managing difficult behaviours, while encouraging good behaviour, independence and self-esteem.
Sessions are based on the principles of the discipline program, 1-2-3 Magic. Parents are taught to recognize the two biggest mistakes of parenting: “Too much talk” and “Too much emotion”; and are provided with easy-to-follow steps for disciplining children without yelling, arguing or spanking.
Different parenting strategies are taught for behaviours falling into different categories:-
STOP behaviours
STOP Behaviours are those behaviours that parents want to eradicate from the child’s repertoire of behaviours. Examples of stop behaviours are yelling, tantrums or disrespect.
START behaviours
START Behaviours are those behaviours that a parent would like to see more of. Examples of start behaviours are when a child puts his or her bag away or gets up and out in the morning. These types of behaviours not only signal that the child is becoming better at managing themselves, but often it means less stress for the parent.
Minor But Annoying Behaviours
Minor But Annoying behaviours are the types of behaviour that parents don’t necessarily like, but are willing to live with them. Often all that is required is a change of attitude in the parent.
The program shows parents how to:-
- Promote their child’s experience with making choices.
- Develop their child’s ability to control his or her own emotions and behaviour.
- Increase their confidence to respond more successfully to their children’s behaviours.
